Alone at My Ex's Wedding- Original Story

My morning alarm went off promptly at 7am on a fine Saturday morning. I rolled over and picked up my phone to turn off the alarm. The date was August 17th. The day of my ex's wedding. I groaned and flopped back into bed, face first into the pillows. All I wanted to do was lie in bed, watch Netflix with a bucket of ice cream and think about how perpetually single I am. But noooo, my ex Rob had to be the "bigger person" and go and invite me to his wedding.

Rob and I had dated for almost two years. It was a good relationship, we had our ups and downs like all couples do but overall it was a good relationship. Until the last month. Rob just turned into the biggest ass hole you could find. Turns out, he was sleeping with the hot sales person from the art store down the street.. Gotta love New York. Always a hot art sales person to steal your boyfriend. Anyway, we broke up. And six months later he seems to think we're on good terms because he invited me to his wedding. To the hot art seller. Who slept with my boyfriend. Yeah I threw a chair at him and used his clothes as cat litter then gave them back. We're on great terms.

I rolled onto my back, grabbed my phone and called my best friend Eric.
"Good morning sunshine." Eric answered.
"Why do you sound so awake?" I asked. "It's like 10 after 7."
"Unlike you, I enjoy being up early." Eric replied. "What's up?"
"It's August 17th." I said.
"Oh. Are you going?" Eric asked instantly knowing what I was talking about.
"I don't know." I groaned. "Will you come with me? I have a plus one."
"Honey, you know I would. But I have that thing with Marcus." Erik replied.
"There's an open bar."
"It sounds tempting, but this is important. I'm meeting his parents this weekend."
"Oh I hate you and you're cute gay relationship."
"No you don't. Because when you're lonely and want to get drunk you're going to get drunk with us." Eric said. "Why don't you ask Evan?"
"Evan? I barely know the guy!" I protested.
"You know him well enough to have his number." Eric pointed out. "Besides he's good company!"
"Fine. I'll text him. Only because you suck and I don't want to go to this thing along." I replied.
"I love you." Eric said before hanging up.

How dare he. Put his own love life before me. What kind of gay best friend is that? And I was still dateless. So I pulled up mine and Eric's mutual friend Evan who I met at Eric's work party and shot him a text.

Hey Evan. Eric said you were free tonight and I was just wondering if you wanted to come to a wedding with me? There's an open bar.
A few minutes late a reply came.
Yeah sure, sounds fun. Attire?
Semi casual. You want to just meet at my place and split a cab?
Yeah, what time?
430
Awesome. See you then :)

So I had a date. Now time for an outfit.

I rolled out of bed at about 8:30 and started getting ready for the day. Breakfast, shower, get dressed, do some work, send some emails, watch some Arrow and before I knew it, it was time to get ready.
I closed my laptop and opened my closet and stared down the abyss of clothing that seemed to be saying "have fun finding an outfit in me ". I began pulling out acceptable outfits for an ex's wedding and laid them on my bed. I wanted to look hot, to make him jealous, but I had enough decency to not outshine the bride. She may be a boyfriend stealing bitch but she did deserve her special day. Even if it was to an ass hat.

Finally I decided on a red skaterish type dress. It had a high neckline, with no sleeves an flowed out at the bottom to just above my knees. I paired it with a simple pair of black pumps, applied some natural makeup and finished off the look with red lipstick. I curled my loosely curled my medium brown hair and left it down hanging around my face. I was just putting on my dangly diamond earrings when the buzzer to my apartment went off.

"Hello?" I said holding down the button.
"Hey, it's me." Evans voice said from the other side.
"Come right up." I replied letting him in.

I gave myself one last look in the mirror. I was as good as I was going to get. A few minutes later there was a knock on the door. I opened the door and there was Evan looking ever so handsome in his black suit. I swear I didn't remember him like this. Last time I saw him he was dorky looking and wearing a polo shirt. Now, oh man, now he looked different. He was tall, taller then me in heels and I'm at least 5"6 in heels. He had gorgeous ice blue eyes, a pearly white smile that could probably melt the Arctic and the hair. Oh my God the hair. It was the perfect shade of blonde, sticking up in the perfect directions and I swear I could hear angels singing when I looked at it. And boy was he toned.

"Hey Charlie." Evan said walking into my apartment, which I was suddenly becoming aware of how messy it was. "You look great!"
"Thanks, so do you." I replied. And boy did I mean it.
"Should we head out?" Evan asked.
"Uh, yeah. Let me just go to the bathroom real quick."

As soon as I shut the door to my en suite bathroom I pulled out my phone and called Eric.
"This better be important because I am currently sitting in the cutest country home sipping martini's with my adorable boyfriend and his parents." Eric said answering the phone.
"You didn't tell me Evan was cute!" I said.
"You didn't ask! And you've met him before!" Eric said.
"Yeah but I met him at your boring work party, where no offence, everyone was boring. Forgive me if I didn't notice."
"Well I didn't really notice either."
"Eric, his ass looks like a piece of work done by Micheal Angelo. It should be in museums as a work of art."
"What are you wearing?" Eric asked.
"My go to sexy red dress." I replied.
"Oh, trying to make Rob jealous I see. Good choice, he's a dick." Eric said. "Look as far as I know Evan is single, so go with it. You never know where the night will lead you."
"Okay. Anyway I have to go. He might think I'm pooping."
"Text me details!" Eric said before I hung up.

I looked in the mirror one last time before leaving my bathroom.
"All right let's go!"

The entire taxi ride there all I could think of was how perfect this guy was. I mean not only was his body a piece of work sent from heaven, but he was smart, kind and funny too. And I learned this all in a half an hour cab ride.

"So who's wedding are we going too?" He asked as we pulled up to the venue of the wedding which was the Central Park Boathouse. Of course it was. She was rich and pretty.
"Uh, just a friend." I said dancing around the real answer.
"A friend?" Evan asked raising his eyebrows.
"Yeah, a friend that I maybe used to date." I added.
"This is your ex's wedding?" Evan asked. "You guys must be on great terms then."
"See this is the funny part of the story." I started. "We broke up six months ago after he cheated on me with his now fiance.  threw a chair at him and used his clothes for cat litter."
"Wow." Evan whistled. "Remind me not to cross you."
"I can do a lot worse then chairs and cat litter. I grew up on a farm with four older brothers."
"Well shit. You're pretty lethal." Evan laughed as they walked to the place where the ceremony was to take place, which of course was right on the lake. "So why did he invite you?"
"Oh probably to make me jealous that he's getting married to a rich, perky blonde while I'm single and the only engagement I have coming up is a Netflix date with my cat." I replied as we sat down near the back.
"He sounds like an ass hat."
"Literally my exact words used to describe him."
"Good thing there's an open bar."
"Yeah good thing."

The ceremony started a few minutes later. I will admit it was a beautiful ceremony. The bridesmaids looked wonderful, (not as good as me) the decorations were fabulous and the stupid skank that stole my boyfriend looked fan freaking tastic. It was only a 15 minute ceremony but it honestly felt like I was sitting there looking at the perfect happy couple, in the perfect wedding venue about to start their perfect little life, for at least four hours. When the wedding party finally left the alter I was able to drop my fake smile and groan.

"Why did it have to be a beautiful ceremony?" I asked Evan as we began to file into the boathouse to where the free alcohol was.
"Because she's rich and hot?" Evan answered.
"Okay now, don't need to call the boyfriend stealing slut hot." I replied.
"Hey, I say what I see." Evan shrugged. "Now let's get you some free alcohol.
"Yes lets." I replied.
"So are you completely over this guy?" Evan asked as they grabbed some champagne glasses from a waiter.
"Honestly, he was an ass hole. He always thought he was a bit better then me just because he had money." I replied. "So I mean, in the long run it's a good thing we aren't together but it's a bit of a burn being here."
"It's kind of a dick move inviting you if I'm being completely honest." Evan said. "Pretty big of you to come though."
"There are two reasons I came a) I didn't want to give him what he wants, which is me not coming and b) I wanted to look really hot and make him jealous."
"Well speaking as a straight, young male, you achieved B quite well."
"Well thank you." I smiled.
I was in shock. Evan thought I looked really hot. Not just hot, but REALLY hot. I quickly texted this to Eric as we sat down at our table.

Well of course you look hot, you're you.
Eric be serious.
Okay fine. Honestly I think he likes you. Or at least wants to get off with you. Either way it will be good for your self esteem.
Thanks Eric.
Anytime sweetie.

Sometimes it's helpful having a gay best friend.
After a few more glasses of very low alcoholic champagne the bridal party arrived from pictures. Introductions were made, dinner was served, blah, blah. Of course because I was sitting at the back and that seemed to be the table of misfits and people they had to invite, we got served last. So by the time we got served the speeches had started. When I finished my meal the happy couple had just started their first dance.

"Is it inappropriate to stand up and get some hard liquor during the couples first dance?" I whispered to Evan. "Because this champagne isn't cutting it anymore."
"I think it might be." Evan whispered back.
"Well then another glass of champagne it is." I said grabbing a glass of a passing waiter.

After the longest, sappiest first dance had finished the dance floor opened up and I was able to get some liquor. I excused myself and made my way over to the bar. I had just ordered a beer when Rob and his wife, who's name I learned was Ashley, (of course it was) came over to me at the bar.

"Charlie! So glad you could make it!" Rob said pulling me into the worlds most awkward hug. "I would like you to meet my wife Ashley, Ashley this is Charlie."
"Nice to meet you." I said with a fake smile.
"Charlie, isn't that a boys name?" Ashley the bimbo blonde said.
"Uh, it's short for Charlotte. And it's unisex." I replied.
"Did you come with anyone Charlie?" Rob asked with a slightly evil grin.

This was the moment. The only reason why she was invited. So Rob could rub his happiness in her face.
"Yeah, she came with me." Evan said walking up behind me and putting his hand around my waist. "I'm Evan, Charlie's boyfriend."
"That's right." I said catching onto what he was playing at. "Evan, my boyfriend."
"Oh, how long have you two been together?" Rob asked his smile disappearing.
"Oh about five months." I replied putting my hand on Evan's chest. "We met just after we split and the rest is history."
"Oh. Congratulations." Rob said rather icily.
"Honey, let's go." His wife said becoming bored of the conversation.
"Yes honey. Enjoy your time." Rob said before walking away with Ashley.

"Thanks Evan, you saved my ass." I said once they were out of hearing distance.
"I know when a friend is in danger." Evan replied handing me my beer. "Now let's get turnt."
"The one thing that actually sounds promising tonight." I said taking a sip of my beer.

Now I wouldn't say I got turnt. But I definitely got tipsy. And that was after three beers. Yes I'm a light weight. Evan on the other hand, was barely tipsy at all. But he seemed to enjoy sitting with my drunk company at a table near the bar.

"So, you're telling me, on your two year anniversary, he slept with her and you walked in on them?" He asked.
"Yes!" I said, maybe a bit too loudly. "I mean, who does that? At least wait until the day after!"
"Yeah no kidding! That must have been horrible." Evan replied.
"Oh trust me it was. Especially since it was in the hotel room he had booked for us for that night. I went there to get my sexy on for him and BAM naked bodies all over the bed." I said taking another sip of beer.
"I think that takes the cake for worst break up." Evan replied.
"Oh I don't know. When I was in 10th grade I got broken up with AT homecoming. He won Homecoming king then went and had sex with the Homecoming queen in the girls bathroom."
"You have had a rough love life I see."
"Rough is an understatement. It's like someone took a well paved road, and took a jackhammer to every inch, then a big earthquake happened, and now I am riding a shitty bike that keeps falling apart over that road."
"Well I never dated anyone in high school." Evan said.
"NO!" I yelled, again probably too loudly, but the beer is talking at this point.
"Yeah, I lied to make you feel better." Evan smiled. "Chicks were all over me in high school. I was the star football player."
"Of course you were."
"Do you want to go outside? It's a bit loud in here."
"Suuuurree." I said going to stand up and almost falling.
"Let me help you." Evan said taking my hand and leading me out of the room.

Evan led us outside to the quieter patio. We could hear the soft buzz of the loud music through the doors but I didn't care. The view was just stunning.

"Wow." I breathed as I looked at the full moon over the lake. "This is one of the things I love about New York City."
"This specific view?" Evan asked.
"The view anywhere in this city. There is nothing like it." I replied.
Suddenly the music inside changed to a slower song. I could tell what song it was from here, Make You Feel My Love sung by Adele. One of my favourites. And I said so.

"I love this song!"
"May I have this dance?" Evan asked holding out his hand.
"You may." I replied taking his hand. "Let's just not move too fast, I don't want to throw up on your shoes."
"Deal." Evan laughed as he pulled me into his hold and began slowly swaying.

We just swayed silently for a while. His hand on my hip, mine on his shoulder. I looked up from the lake and saw that his brilliant blue eyes were looking at me. I smiled and rested my head on his chest and continued to sway.

"I really like you Charlie." He said randomly. "Like, I really like you. I've liked you since we met at my office party."
"I think I like you too Evan." I said looking up at him.

It felt like it happened in slow motion. We had stopped swaying and were just looking at each other. He leaned in and I closed my eyes and we kissed. It was like magic. It felt like there were sparks going through my whole body. And then I threw up. Not into his mouth, no. I'm not that unsophisticated. After we broke away, I smiled at him, he smiled and me, then I literally heaved over and blew chunks. Yup. Class act right here.

"I think it's time to go home." Evan said rubbing my back.
The next morning I woke up with a pounding headache. The after effects of alcohol ladies and gentlemen. I groaned and rolled over and looked at my phone to see I had two missed calls from Eric. So I called him back.

"Good morning my love!" He sang into the phone.
"Shhh, not so loud." I groaned.
"Oh you are so hungover aren't you." Eric said. Even from this side of the phone I could hear him smiling.
"Yes." I sighed. "And I only had like four beers."
"Oh honey, you know not to drink beer." Eric sighed.
"Yes I know but I needed to get drunk."
"So tell me about it. Was it horrible?" Eric asked.
"Oh yeah." And I launched into the story of the worst wedding ever.
"How did things go with Evan?" Eric asked after I finished.
"Honestly, really well." I smiled remembering that kiss. "We kissed and it felt like magic."
"OH MY GOD!" Eric yelled.
"Shhh, hangover voice." I winced.
"I didn't think that would happen! I thought he would ask you on a date but never a kiss!" Eric squealed.
"Yeah, it was great. Until I quite literally blew chunks everywhere." I sighed.
"No. No you didn't."
"Yes I did."
"Please tell me not in his mouth."
"No not in his mouth."
"Yeah, thank god that would have been awkward." Evan said from her doorway.
"Wait, was that Evan?" Eric said from the other line.
"Yeah, uh I gotta go." I said slowly.
"DID YOU SLEEP WITH HIM?" Was the last thing I heard before hanging up.

"Have a good sleep?" Evan asked walking in with some breakfast and placing it on her side table.
"Uh yeah." I said suddenly becoming aware of the fact that I was still wearing last nights clothes and makeup and probably looked like a homeless lady who just ran though the sewers. "Thanks for breakfast."
"Yeah no problem." Evan said sitting on the edge of the bed.
"So did you go spend the night?" I asked trying to remember if I did sleep with him or not."
"I slept on the couch." Evan smiled. "You pretty much passed out as soon as I put you in bed."
"Wow that's embarrassing." I said.
"It's cute. You're cute." He said. "So I guess you remember last night."
"Yeah. See funny thing about me and alcohol, especially beer. I may seemed REALLY drunk but I wasn't actually that drunk so I remember everything but have all the effects of being super drunk. Including the hangover." I replied.
"You're hilarious." Evan laughed. "So, did you mean what you said?"
"Yeah I did." I replied inching a bit closer to him.
"So I guess you wouldn't mind if I did this then." Evan said pulling me into a kiss.
"No I wouldn't mind at all." I smiled when we tore apart. "In fact, I would like you to join me in a hungover cuddle session."
"I will take you up on that." Evan laughed sliding next to me as I laid down a placed my head on his shoulder.

Evan kissed me one more time and as he did my phone rang. I groaned and leaned over to check who it was. Eric.

"He can wait." I said declining the call and going back to kissing Evan which let's face it, is much better then talking to Eric.
